Ptolemy Grey was a very interesting person, the events that happen in his life was unacceptable  mainly as an senior older adult of his age and with the medical condition he had.  After reading this book the five terms that come to mind are as follow; Bereavement, Elder Mistreatment/Abuse, Environmental Gerontology, Loneliness, and Quality of Life.
Ptolemy felt "bereavement" when the people he was close to and loved died, their death was to much to handle, they were either set-up to be killed ( Billy Knight), died (Sensia), or murdered (Reggie and  Coy).  This took away part of his heart and life when Sensia, Reggie, and Coy were no longer alive.  The book talks about "during the course of lifetime, every individual will experience bereavement following the loss of a friend, family member or other love one".  "The situation of individuals who anticipate or experience the loss of someone significant through that person's death, and the subsequent adjustments made as a result" Phillips, Ajrouch, & Hillcoat-Nalletamby.
Mr. Gray received much "elder mistreatment and abuse"  from Melinda often when she took his money in his apartment and when she seen him on the streets she tries to jump on him and take his money.  Ptolemy was very scared of Melinda because of what happens to him when he see her until he started being protected by other people from her.  Hilly his blood relative took him to the bank and had him to sign three of his checks and only gave him money from one of the checks instead of giving him all of his money from all three checks. Hilly felt Ptolemy would not notice he stole his money because at that time Ptolemy's memory was bad but it wasn't that bad, Ptolemy knew what Hilly had done.  Alfred wanted to jump on Ptolemy in his own niece house the day of Reggie wait service. The so called Doctor Ruben didn't mean Ptolemy any good, he only wanted his body when he died. On pgs. 189-190 the Dr. only came over to check on Ptolemy to see have he died yet. Now I ask you, "what type of doctor is that"?  Per the text book "mistreatment is either abuse or neglect, and intentional or unintentional, also destructive behavior is physical, emotional, psychological and also financial" " Actions perpetrated by a trusted other, intended or not, that risk harm to a vulnerable older adult" Phillips, Ajrouch,& Hillcoat-Nalletamby.
Ptolemy became a hoarder, his apartment had roaches, rodents, all types of crawling and flying bugs in it, dirt, dusk, grease, and we are not going to talk about what was in his toilet and bathroom, old stack newspaper, all types of old furniture and the list goes on and on.  Ptolemy could not bring himself to get rid of anything he or Sensia brought into the house, he felt very comfortable in his apartment although it was a mess.   For him it was a something he could hold on to of his past with Sensia as well as items he received from Coy. This is called "environmental gerontology" , per the text book , "it is the interaction between the older person and their environments.  It also deals with the social, natural, and psychological environment; and the environment as public, private and personal space" Phillips, Ajrouch, & Hillcoat-Nalletamby.  Also dementia was causing him not to be able to live any type of  "quality of life",  for example; he would hide items in his apartment and his memory would fail him, he then sometimes would forget were he has placed certain items.  The way he lived in his apartment was not fit for a dog to live in until Robyn came in and clean it up.  Not only did she clean up his apartment she brought Ptolemy happiness, companionship as well as love.   Quality of life per the text book states is "a multidimensional concept embracing subjective and objective appreciation of an older person's life situation in the context of their socio-cultural and economic environment" Phillips, Ajrouch & Hillcoat-Nalletamby.  It is a more positive view of later life and to view successful ageing from a variety of perspectives (Evans, 2009).
Mr. Gray experience and suffered a great deal of "loneliness"  when people around him was dying the only person he trusted was Reggie until he was murdered.  Ptolemy only went out of the house to go to the bank, restaurant, and store only with Reggie.  Ptolemy only two children did not want to have anything to do with him.  Mr. Gray never socialize with other family members or his neighbors or anyone.  He became a loner, he kept to himself. especially  once Sensia passed.  It is stated per text book that loneliness is "undesirable or negative feeling about how individuals perceive their situation in relation to others, particularly with regard to social engagement and interaction" Phillips, Ajrouch, & Hillcoat-Nalletamby.

I must first start off by saying I am truly loving this book.  I have not finish it yet but what I have read thus far I love and can't wait until I finish it.  Ptolemy Gray has encounter lots of sadness in his live, from a young child to an older adult.  But there are four terms that come to my mind in this book.

Ptolemy was suffering from an early stage of dementia due to his ageing.  It was very hard for him to remember family member names or even when he leaves one room and go into another, he would forget what he went in the next room for.  He was confused and his mind would wonder all the time, it's all signs of dementia.  Dementia is defined as "aphasia", problem with communication, "agnosia", problem with recognition and "disturbance in executive functioning" Phillips,Ajrouch & Hillcoat-Nalletamby, 2012 .  They have chronic memory lost and at least one other cognitive function per David B. Reuben statement on the video. Ptolemy was 91 years old which has cause his ageing process.  There are four types of ageing which are chronological, biological, psychological and social ageing.  Although Ptolemy is an older adult he refused to move out of his apartment and was not going to allow anyone else to put him out.

Ptolemy needed much "care" to help him with food shopping, cashing his checks, house cleaning, protection for people on the outside, doctor appointments, cooking, managing his money, and much, much more. Per the book it states care "provides and receive assistance in a supportive matter" Phillips,Ajrouch & Hillcoat-Nalletamby, 2012.

Mr. Grey had Reggie to care for him and he was also  his "advocacy" until Reggie was murdered then he had nobody for awhile until Robyn came into his life.  Advocacy per the book states "is a process to help older people ensure that their rights and choices are exercised and to enhance self-determination" Phillips, Ajrouch & Hillcoat-Nalletamb.  This is the role Reggie played in Mr. Gray life and much more then Robyn took on that role alone with other hats she wore to help in Mr. Gray life.

I was very surprised to learn that social workers use the internet technology for varies types of services.  I surf the internet and found several sites that caught my attention that helps older adults as well as their family members.  I was unaware of all the services out there that social workers deals with on a daily basis.  I gather up a lot of the information I found on the internet and what my classmates has provided and enter them onto my resource list.  The internet is a great online technology resource for students who will be going into the field to become social workers or just about whatever field of you choosing.  It's a Whole New World of Technology Out There Just  Waiting For Us To Use.

I found a site called Social Workers and e-Therapy which includes Telemedicine & Telehealth.  It is  offered to  clients in a range of treatment approaches.  The web site is  Social Workers and e-Therapy, it is approved by NASW & ASWB

Another site I found is  under Social Work Today, it's called Navigating the New Age of Electronic Counseling.  This is also  through the internet as well.  It deal with people living a far distance from their counselor so they could still receive services.  It's another way of electronic technology in delivering clinical services.  This also includes Videoconferencing.

I had to really listen to this song and the lyrics four times to get the full meaning of this song and what he is really saying.  As I listen  to this song it really touch me deeply.  First of all I had never heard this song until now.  The lyrics that Stevie Wonder used and wrote in this song were very touching and meaningful.  He reached back and talked about the Holocaust and Slavery, while society tried to sweep the past under the rug and pretend these things never happen.  But it is part of our history and it did happen and it will never go away.
This song has a beautiful message to it.  In society today there's so much hatred and killing than ever before.  But Stevie Wonder's song makes a person stop in their tracks, take a look around, and at themselves to see that this world can change for the better.  But it first must start with yourself, what's in your mind and heart and to make a change in your mind and heart.
We must love one another, like he states, "me for you, you for me".  We as society must first realize like Stevie Wonder states, "there's no chance of world salvation less the conversation peace".
Again, IT MUST FIRST START WITH "LOVE,PEACE,SALVATION,CONVERSATION,COMMUCATION, AND TRUST".

Hello Class,
The resource link I found on the internet as it relates to social workers studying aging is called American Society on Aging (ASA).  I selected this resource link because it covers several areas and programs for older adults.  This organization works with the aging as it relates to business, caregiving, community-based programs, religion and spirituality, physical health, mental health, LGBTQ Aging, Housing Accessibility and Technology and much more.
The link is  http://www.asaging.org
Please take the time to browse this site.

After I viewed the four modules this week there were so much information I learned and stood out to me.  I will only mention three of them.
1.  In module 6, it talked about the technology landscape.  Video and web conferencing involves Skype, it works all over the world.  It has become a very important technology as far as communication between two or more people.  For example, I used this here at WSU in my tutoring sessions when I were unable to come into the main campus from home.

2. In module 7, talks about Social care databases, I was very interested in Agelnfo because it deals with Gerontology.  It provides information about old age and ageing in several types of resources. For example, I were not aware of this type of social care databases to gather information on older adults,  now I can broaden my knowledge, resources, and research.

3. Module 8,  dealt with knowledge sharing in effective organization and ineffective organization.  The only way any company can do a good job, they must communicate with each other.  Staff members must realized they are all on the same team as well as trying to reach the same goal.  So to spend time repeating what your staff member has worked on and the other dept. just done, only  because the right hand won't tell the left hand what they are doing, this don't make a bit of sense.  This means they are working against their goal then toward their goal.  For example, some employees feels if they give-up their good ideas they may not get the full credit for it so they don't and some of them are not team players on the job at all.  But when you share your knowledge and play a part in decision making, everyone wins.

Example 4; There are people on the job that were not made to be leaders.  In Leadership, they  have knowledge and experience, it starts from the top.  Leaders make sure everyone is on the same page working together to become as one to get the job done.  Leaders make sure their staff has everything needed to do their job and they also would play a big role in decision making.

Question: With so many technology resources out there, how can we as social worker make sure we are providing our older adult with the best information possible?
